The musical whirlwind of the last 12 months

Seasons of Shows

Hello lovely musical theatre friend,

Is it me, or is the theatre world spinning faster than usual? Shows announcing closing dates, others getting surprise extensions. It's hard to keep up.

So I checked with our darling chatGPT. Apparently the number of openings, extensions and tours are all growing, on both sides of the pond. Closures are also decreasing. So the industry really is on the up, hurrah!

Just a bit of necessary whiplash for us fans!

Here's to whatever comes.

  • The Devil Wears Prada dropped "Miranda Girl" - the first track of the cast album, written by Elton John-Shaina Taub-Kate Wetherhead. The full digital release is on 19th September.

"I finally saw Hamilton for the first time. I know. During the first act, I got this overwhelming feeling of finally understanding what everyone had been talking about for years. Then in act two came 'Stay Alive' reprise ("Sept huit neuf... huit neuf" - oh god) and I completely lost it. I sat in that dark theatre ugly crying. That scene was like watching my biggest nightmare play out. I went home and snuck into my kid's room to watch them sleep. I've never felt so moved by a musical, that it made me evaluate my own life."

A weekly reprise to your inbox When Showgirl meets Musical Theatre All eyes on our illusionist Hello lovely musical theatre friend, Since my late twenties, I've been a Swiftie AND a musicals fan. These passions reside in the same universe, but honestly I didn't realise how closely they orbit until I came to write this Taylor themed newsletter. When "The Life of a Showgirl" dropped this week, I kept thinking about how Taylor's entire career has been one long theatrical performance - the...

A weekly reprise to your inbox Where You Belong Hello lovely musical theatre friend, Today we had our musical theatre book club! With folks dialing in from London, York, Chicago and Brighton, we had a wonderful mix of insightful thoughts about the cast album for Maybe Happy Ending. The group thought it was refreshingly short, but also catchy, different, earnest and gentle. An oasis of charm from the cynical world outside. We all agreed we would go to see the show if we could, controversy...

A weekly reprise to your inbox Reawakening a showmance Come to the Fun Home Hello lovely musical theatre friend, Ever forgotten how much you love a show? Like, if someone mentioned that show, you would logically remember it was good... But somehow the memory of discovering it has faded with time. Then it comes back into your life - and BAM. Your heart goes boom. This happened to me last week. I made the trip to York to see my BFF Cat absolutely shine as Helen in Fun Home. Watching her bring...
