The world we dream about and the one we live in now…

Why this newsletter exists

Musical theatre fans are more than a cog in a commercial wheel.

The economics of creating a successful musical is TOUGH. It is can take 5-7 years, it can cost hundreds of thousands, they need to sell +70% of its capacity consistently and get great reviews - just to stay open, let alone become profitable.

So the pressure to sell tickets is REAL. That's why we get a whole lot of marketing pushed at us. The PR, the ticket lotteries, the reviews, the social media content, the tours, behind the scenes stunts...

So I decided to make something FOR fans, BY fans. With zero links to sell tickets!

On this journey, the best bits so far have been hearing from you.

So don't just browse... dive in! That's where the magic happens. Please reply, comment, contribute.

This is my story...

"I had seen various amateur productions of Company and generally was a fan of the show. But when I saw the gender-swapped revival on the West End, it absolutely floored me. It was days before I was getting married to my flat-mate-turned-boyfriend, so I could get a visa to move with him to the states. Not only that, I was about to turn 35, the same age as the protagonist Bobbie. It was surreal watching her carry those big balloons around stage, wondering about the merits of marriage. I felt like I was her. Every contradiction of commitment, every tick of her body clock. By the end, I was in floods of tears. I look back now and I can see the emotional release helped me prepare for my legal wedding, sitting right next to my husband-to-be. It was such a wild experience, but one I will never, ever forget. Three years later, we had a wedding celebration and had the lyrics of both "Marry Me A Little" and "Being Alive" as a reading. Now we listen to those tracks on our anniversary every year. It's a part of us."

A weekly reprise to your inbox When Showgirl meets Musical Theatre All eyes on our illusionist Hello lovely musical theatre friend, Since my late twenties, I've been a Swiftie AND a musicals fan. These passions reside in the same universe, but honestly I didn't realise how closely they orbit until I came to write this Taylor themed newsletter. When "The Life of a Showgirl" dropped this week, I kept thinking about how Taylor's entire career has been one long theatrical performance - the...

A weekly reprise to your inbox Where You Belong Hello lovely musical theatre friend, Today we had our musical theatre book club! With folks dialing in from London, York, Chicago and Brighton, we had a wonderful mix of insightful thoughts about the cast album for Maybe Happy Ending. The group thought it was refreshingly short, but also catchy, different, earnest and gentle. An oasis of charm from the cynical world outside. We all agreed we would go to see the show if we could, controversy...

A weekly reprise to your inbox Reawakening a showmance Come to the Fun Home Hello lovely musical theatre friend, Ever forgotten how much you love a show? Like, if someone mentioned that show, you would logically remember it was good... But somehow the memory of discovering it has faded with time. Then it comes back into your life - and BAM. Your heart goes boom. This happened to me last week. I made the trip to York to see my BFF Cat absolutely shine as Helen in Fun Home. Watching her bring...
