Why this newsletter exists, part two

Musicals for You and Me
(But Mostly Me)

Hello lovely musical theatre friend,

Thank you for being part of this tiny, but intensely fabulous community that I get to speak to every Sunday about this wonderful topic.

There are lots of different reasons why 'If Musicals Matter' came into existence (see part one). But one of the real reasons is simply for the pure bloody joy of shows. I wanted more musical theatre in my life, so this was one way to do that at a time when I can't see a show every month (ahhhh, Chicago), let alone every week (London, I miss you).

It's also a way to learn something new. For more on that, check out my LinkedIn post. It is scary putting myself out there. I'm creating something I want for myself, but also sharing it, in the hope it will help fill your cup too.

You might have noticed a few things:

✨Some weeks I'll write less than others. Because life.

✨I've rescheduled my first musical book club to the end of September, so people can attend after the summer. I'd love to see you there! Deets below.

✨I'm dropping the 'we'. Because it was Confusifying (thank you for the feedback, Julie). It is 'I', your friend Charlotte.

Here's to another day of sun!

Dear Evan Hansen

Ben Platt originated the lead role of Evan, then he was weird in the movie *sigh*. You Will Be Found is quite the anthem though.

A weekly reprise to your inbox When Showgirl meets Musical Theatre All eyes on our illusionist Hello lovely musical theatre friend, Since my late twenties, I've been a Swiftie AND a musicals fan. These passions reside in the same universe, but honestly I didn't realise how closely they orbit until I came to write this Taylor themed newsletter. When "The Life of a Showgirl" dropped this week, I kept thinking about how Taylor's entire career has been one long theatrical performance - the...

A weekly reprise to your inbox Where You Belong Hello lovely musical theatre friend, Today we had our musical theatre book club! With folks dialing in from London, York, Chicago and Brighton, we had a wonderful mix of insightful thoughts about the cast album for Maybe Happy Ending. The group thought it was refreshingly short, but also catchy, different, earnest and gentle. An oasis of charm from the cynical world outside. We all agreed we would go to see the show if we could, controversy...

A weekly reprise to your inbox Reawakening a showmance Come to the Fun Home Hello lovely musical theatre friend, Ever forgotten how much you love a show? Like, if someone mentioned that show, you would logically remember it was good... But somehow the memory of discovering it has faded with time. Then it comes back into your life - and BAM. Your heart goes boom. This happened to me last week. I made the trip to York to see my BFF Cat absolutely shine as Helen in Fun Home. Watching her bring...
